Because it’s a world-class vacation destination, Cape Cod is an especially popular location for destination weddings. The Cape is also within driving distance of several large metropolitan areas so, unlike some far-flung vacation hotspots, we also have a sizable number of seasonal residents who wouldn’t think of going anywhere else when it’s time to celebrate a wedding in the family.

Both of these factors have worked to create a thriving community of topnotch wedding professionals, and an unrivaled selection of wedding venues. These factors also mean there is serious competition when it comes to securing the perfect place on your preferred date

How far in advance should we secure our Cape Cod wedding venue?

That is the big question and it really depends on what you’re looking for, in both location and date. If the only date that will work for you is a certain Saturday in June, September or early October, and you have your heart absolutely set on a waterfront venue such as Nauticus Marina, you’ll want to give yourself about 18 months of lead time. If you have a particular month in mind, give or take a week or two, and a general idea of the kind of venue you prefer, such as beachfront vs. museum, 12 months out will likely suffice.

Which is a better wedding venue; a resort, or a private home?

This really isn’t a matter of which is “better,” but which is “better for you.” Cape Cod is home to several truly exceptional resorts and they do a wonderful job with weddings. If you’ve always envisioned a formal ballroom as the perfect place for your wedding, a resort may best suit your needs. If you’re thinking of a more sand-in-the-toes/summer breeze kind of Cape Cod wedding, consider something with outdoor space that you can make your own. A museum, such as Osterville Historical Museum or Highfield Hall & Gardens, can be an unexpected choice that offers a unique indoor/outdoor vibe. Another important consideration is time. Many hotels and resorts will host two weddings per day in any given space, especially on weekends. They’ll be sure you have ample time to enjoy your special day, but there will likely be a time limit.

If we rent a house for the week, can we have our wedding there?

That depends on the house. If this is something you’re considering, think about rental homes that are designed specifically to host destination weddings. The Winslow Estate in Orleans, and Underwood Estates in Chatham, are just a couple of examples. These types of properties let you spend your wedding week or weekend at the home with your family or wedding party – or both – and host your reception in the same place. Depending on which property you choose, you may also be able to host your rehearsal dinner and après-wedding brunch at these hybrid home/wedding venue properties. Please contact us for additional suggestions. One thing we would highly caution against doing is planning your wedding at a rental home without getting the express permission of the homeowner. It is also crucial to know whether the zoning of the town where the home is located will allow you to have a wedding there.

What about having our wedding at my parents’ summer house; that’s okay, right?

We love catering at-home weddings, but this too depends on the house, as well as the neighborhood. A fairly large lawn and ample parking, or ample on-street parking, are pretty much musts for an at-home wedding. So too is an awareness of town noise ordinances and a respect for one’s neighbors. As far as the infrastructure needed to host a wedding at home, tap into that “thriving community of topnotch wedding professionals” we mentioned above and magic will happen. Seeking a certain kind of tent? No problem. Dreaming of an elaborate lighting plan? Easily, and elegantly, done. Need a dance floor cantilevered over a sloping lawn? Even that is doable. And as the largest wedding caterer on Cape Cod, we come fully prepared with our own mobile kitchen including grills, ovens and refrigeration. Our staff won’t be traipsing in and out of your kitchen and rearranging your refrigerator.
